If we look at citizenship stats for last ten years, it is clear that every year almost 150,000 Canadian Permanent Residents get Canadian Citizenship. Similar to applying for permanent residence application, candidates go through a citizenship application. Permanent residents of Canada needs to satisfy some of the eligibility criteria to be able to apply for citizenship.
Here are the eligibility criteria:
- The applicant should have lived in Canada for at least 1095 days during the five years before the date you sign for your citizenship application. Time spent in Canada as a Temporary resident as a student, worker etc within last five years can be used to count one half day, up to a year.
- If the applicant is 18 to 54 years old at the time of application, they must meet the Canadian Language Benchmark Level 4 or higher.
- The applicant should not have any criminal background.
- The applicant who is in age 18 to 54 years old, need to pass citizenship test. They need to proof that they have basic information about Canada’s history, economy, geography etc.
Process to applying citizenship:
Applicants will need to submit their application to IRCC. Once it is confirmed that the applicant has met all of the eligibility criteria, they will need to take a 30-minutes citizenship test. IRCC will provide them a study guide to get passing score for the test. Once applicants pass the test, they attend a citizenship ceremony and they get their certificate of Canadian citizenship.
