Application & PR details
The 5-year eligibility period is the 5 years immediately before the date you sign your application, ending the day before that date.
Your PR date must be before your proposed application date — you can't sign a citizenship application before becoming a PR.
Language proof and the citizenship test only apply to ages 18–54. This tool is built for adult applications — a "Under 18" result should be reviewed under the minor 5(1)/5(2) rules separately.

Absences from Canada, after becoming a PR
Add every trip outside Canada during the eligibility period. The departure and return dates themselves count as days in Canada — only the full days strictly between them are subtracted.
No absences added — if you left Canada at any point after becoming a PR, add each trip for an accurate count.

Eligible time in Canada before PR
Time physically in Canada as a temporary resident (visitor, student, worker) or approved protected person, before you became a PR, can count at half value — up to 365 days of credit.
Add each period of eligible pre-PR presence — protected-person time only counts from approval until the day before you became a PR.

Special situations
These days don't count toward physical presence, even though you were in Canada. Add only periods you've confirmed with a lawyer or RCIC — some exceptions exist.

Crown-servant days can count as full days even while outside Canada, but the criteria are specialized. This tool flags it for review rather than calculating it automatically, so it doesn't give you a false number.

Other adult eligibility requirements
You may need to have filed taxes for at least 3 of the 5 years right before applying.
Adults 18–54 need speaking and listening at CLB/NCLC level 4 or higher, with accepted proof.
Applicants 18–54 must also take the citizenship test after applying — IRCC invites you after submission. This screening doesn't treat a not-yet-completed future test as a failure; it only checks the requirements that apply before you apply.
