Canada takes action to reduce fraud in Express Entry system

December 23, 2024 – Ottawa – The Government of Canada is committed to maintaining a fair and transparent immigration system while continuing to attract top global talent.
To further prevent and reduce fraud, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has announced a significant change to the Express Entry system: candidates will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer.
This temporary measure, set to take effect in spring 2025, aims to curb fraudulent activities involving the buying and selling of labour market impact assessments (LMIAs) for immigration purposes. By removing the incentive to misuse job offers, Canada is reinforcing the integrity of its immigration process.
Who Will Be Affected?
Once implemented, this change will apply to all candidates in the Express Entry pool, including those currently working in Canada on a temporary basis. However, individuals who have already received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) or have an application in progress will not be affected.
Supporting a Fair and Effective Immigration System
Immigration plays a crucial role in Canada’s economic growth. The Express Entry system ensures that Canada welcomes skilled workers who contribute to key sectors and support the country’s long-term prosperity. This adjustment reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to a responsive, well-managed, and equitable immigration system.
Quote
“We are taking meaningful action to combat fraud while ensuring Canada remains a top destination for skilled professionals. Immigration has always been fundamental to our success, and we are committed to welcoming the best and brightest so that all newcomers have access to quality jobs, housing, and the support they need to thrive.”
— The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
